What Is An Artist?

This story started because my brother asked me if Spin Art is art.

The question opened a discussion of my view of art, and we thought it best if I capture the key points of our chat before the ideas were forgotten.  By no means can I provide the end-all answers to such questions, but I have provided my initial answers to the question that my brother posed.  I will answer the “Artist” question in this blog.

An Artist:

  • knows when to stop.  They have an instinct for beauty and can feel that moment when an art piece is ‘Done!’

  • has an idea in mind.  Possesses direction.

  • has a desire to control the creative process.

  • has the ability to control the art medium being used.

  • has the passion to work on or think about art on a regular basis.

  • appreciates and understands the various art mediums.

  • in most cases, appreciates and can master the use of color.

  • understands the reality and value of outside sources (God, luck, special/favorite brushes/tools, certain brands of paints and time).

  • possesses dedication to the craft.

  • understands that art is (at best) 20% fun and 80% work.

  • sees images, thoughts, or events that others may not see – and captures them for others to see or understand, long after the artist/writer is gone.

  • must possess or exudes passion, ecstasy, purpose, emotion and/or desire to create and share the work.

  • must have some lasting success either by sales, constant praise from many circles, awards/accolades from others in the art field and long-standing appreciation for the artist’s works.

  • must have been acknowledged as being skilled in one or two types of art.

  • promotes their art.

  • can plan to create good art, even when not inspired to do so.

  • will have an ‘Aha Moment’ when they realize they are an artist and can create special moments of pleasure or enjoyment for others on a consistent basis.  When an artist can shout, “This is what it all is about!”
